Custom Technology Design

CPE leans on deep expertise in biomass heat and energy systems to design custom material handling equipment which includes fuel/feedstock distribution drag chain conveyors, fuel/feedstock metering bins, custom water-cooled screw conveyors, submerged ash drag conveyors, scrubber effluent clarifier conveyors, silos, hoppers, etc.

Employing existing assets to generate process heat or power is often more cost-effective than installing all new equipment. CPE excels in maximizing existing asset potential through retrofits that allow for the combustion of challenging/opportunity fuels, to lower your carbon footprint, and/or to increase capacity. The retrofits include converting the furnace enclosure to membrane wall, replacing the grate system, increasing the generating bank surface area, modernizing combustion controls, adding online tube cleaning systems, and/or converting to a fluidized bed for burning high moisture fuels.

With CPE's proprietary boiler heat transfer software, increasing boiler capacity is achieved with the lowest cost and most reliable solutions available.

CPE has extensive experience and expertise in combustion kinetics and solid fuel combustion system applications. From this, a library of casting materials is available which allows for the application of the longest life castings available. The materials library allows for quick turnaround prototyping of custom castings for each customer's application and need. Custom designs center around fuel distributors, stoker grate bars (pinhole with and without steam nozzles, vibrating grate both water and air-cooled, and reciprocating grate), fluidized bed bubble caps, and ash reinjection nozzles and eductors.

To thermally destruct VOCs, CPE turnkey designs thermal oxidizers. Each system is bespoke to the customer's application and can support a high degree of turndown and some particulate. Often these systems are provided with waste heat recovery to improve system efficiency. The waste heat recovery can be steam generation, combustion air heating, hot water heating, or thermal oil for the process.

Torrefied biomass pellets are a direct substitute for coal in pulverized coal units and can be produced to closely match the calorific value of the coal. Torrefied biomass is also an excellent feedstock for integrated gasification combined cycle technology (IGCC), allowing minimal gas cleanup ahead of the combustion turbine.

CPE's personnel have been involved in the R&D and commercialization of Biomass Torrefaction Equipment since 2009. The economic key to Biomass Torrefaction is the energy recovery from the devolatilization of the feedstock, and CPE has proven this element for over a decade. Our systems allow the asset operators to control the energy content of the fuel and make customized fuel to order. The CPE Biomass Torrefaction Equipment is energy efficient, recuperative, safe, and reliable.

Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) is a process capable of processing high moisture and low-grade feedstocks (such as swine lagoon waste, sewage sludge, cow manure, etc.) into high-grade products such as torrefied fuels, biochar, and even high-grade carbon for Lithium-ion batteries.

CPE has been involved with a leading research institution on a pilot system demonstrating this technology and has designed the equipment for a leading renewable energy developer for a commercialized facility. This process involves high pressures, high temperatures, very low pHs, and slurries.

CPE can turnkey design critical emissions control equipment capable of reducing NOx, CO, SOx, HCl, Hg and PM for solid, liquid, and gaseous fuel combustion systems. The systems include Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR), CO Catalyst, Dry Sorbent Injection, Activated Carbon Injection, Wet Scrubbers, Baghouses, Multiclone Dust Collectors, and Cyclones. CPE can design the equipment "white-labeled" so the equipment is labeled with your company's branding.
